Nursery made my child a monster

Connor turned 18 months on the 2nd of May. We were so excited to be able to start nursery at church. Connor was not so excited. I've said on more than one occasion that our ward is practically a different religion down here. Programs are run very different than most wards and nursery is no exception. Here's some examples-#1 Our nursery leader is there by herself. Our ward was combined in October and they still ( 7 months later) haven't called any nursery helpers. When I talked to the leader about this on Sunday she said, "oh, one of the parents will usually stay in." (doesn't that defeat the point of nursery??) 2nd example, all the kids (ages 18 months to THREE years) are combined the entire two hours. I thought that it was because of small numbers. Well, come to find out there is a huge number of kids but the leader doesn't mind it because in her words, "it's not that bad." I find it quite annoying that when my child finally calms down to play with a toy, a snotty nosed three year old comes and takes it away because "it's a purple car, and you're a boy, so you can't play with a PURPLE car!"

Now Connor has a horrible tantrum any time he thinks he has to play with another toddler, or when someone he doesn't know extrememly well comes to our house. Who knew nursery could be so traumatizing?? Any words of advice would be helpful. :) I'm trying to get him playing with other kids more outside of church, we're doing a singing/story time at home each day but other than that I have no idea what to do.
